Who is Strength Foundations Classes For?
Any age, from 10 years up. We want to share the benefits of strength training across the whole age range, from kids to older adults and everyone in between. There’s no upper age limit, and our oldest member is 77!
This class is ideal for those completely new to strength training, or even new to the gym entirely. You will learn everything you need to get stronger and more resilient, under the guidance of an expert coach.
In addition, the class is great for those who have some gym experience but have not done anything for a while, perhaps years. You’re feeling rusty and need to get back into a gym routine before you would feel confident to lift heavy again.
Another option is for those who are experienced lifters but dealing with an injury, minor illness or life stress. Strength Foundations is a great way to keep your gym routine and do something positive for your body, until you can get back to your usual activities.
What are Strength Foundations Classes Like?
- The class is 45 minutes long, including warm up
- We train the whole body in each session, including legs, upper body and core for a full body strength workout.
- We use a variety of gym equipment, including dumbbells and kettlebells
- You’ll start with very light resistance training and only progress when you are ready – you won’t be told to lift heavy weights straight away!
- You will be shown exactly how to do each movement, and coached to do the movement well
- If you have an old injury or a limitation, our coaches will provide alternative options, and help you improve the movement
- It’s not ‘go go go’, there will be rest periods and breaks in between movements. This class is for everyone and all fitness levels.
- We encourage people to chat and get to know each other. We want you to have fun and enjoy spending time on yourself, away from life’s pressures.

Strength Foundations FAQs
Will lifting weights increase my risk of injury?
No, lifting appropriate weights under the supervision of an experienced coach will make you more resilient in everyday life. Of course, no activity is completely free from injury risk – but sitting on the sofa is not risk-free either! A sedentary lifestyle raises your risk of premature death. By joining a supervised strength class with an appropriate training program, you are mitigating the risk of injury as much as is reasonable.
Will strength training stunt my child’s growth?
No, this is a myth! Research now shows that properly supervised strength training can be very helpful for a child’s development. Strength training builds muscle, increases bone density and improves tendon and ligament strength. It improves sport performance, everyday co-ordination and balance, and can help prevent injury in sport by making the body more resilient. Find out more here.
I have issues or injuries with my knee/hip/lower back etc, can I still do this class?
Yes, if you have old or chronic issues with particular areas of the body, you can still participate in this class. Please note that if you are under the care of a doctor or physio, they will need to sign you off to participate in the class. Depending on your issues, you may be better off with one-to-one training, so please contact us if you are in any doubt.
Will lifting weights make me bulk up?
Lifting weights doesn’t make people ‘bulky’ by accident. There are many benefits to lifting weights, including functional strength, stronger bones and ligaments, maintaining and increasing muscle mass (especially as we get older), feeling more confident, relieving stress and moving better.
At Strength Ambassadors we focus on functional strength more than ‘bodybuilding’.
You can become stronger without adding a lot of muscle mass, as strength is also related to the nervous system and increasing its efficiency. Your body shape will also change over time, and you’ll see evidence of muscles that you didn’t even know you had!
