Your Introduction to Weight Lifting
Our Lifting for Beginners workshop in London is a 2-hour, hands-on introduction designed to help you start lifting weights safely and confidently in a friendly, supportive environment. You will learn how to use free weights such as dumbbells, kettlebells and an empty bar or unweighted bar to perform a full body workout covering all the major muscle groups.
- Learn the starting position and proper form for key exercises including squat, deadlift, bench press, row, overhead press and bicep curls
- Understand how strength training and resistance training can help you build muscle, increase muscle tone, burn more calories and boost everyday fitness
- Practise the correct stance and position of the body for each movement, and learn how to breathe and brace the core to lift safely.
- Get clear training advice on how much weight to use, when to choose a very light load or light load, and how to progress in low increments to heavier weights without adding weight too fast
Throughout the session, the coach will give you individual feedback on good form so you can avoid injury and feel ready to walk into your local gym knowing exactly what to do.
Is Lifting for Beginners Workshop For You?
The Lifting for Beginners workshop is ideal if you:
- Are completely new to lifting weights or returning after a long break
- Feel unsure about where to start with gym workouts and want clear, practical coaching instead of trying to copy strangers in the gym
- Want to improve core strength, upper body and leg muscles as part of a balanced strength training workout that targets all muscle groups
The workshop is suitable for complete beginners, with no gym experience necessary, and we regularly welcome participants from age 10 through to 70+. The coach will offer variations for different mobility levels, so whether you are practising bodyweight squats or using a dumbbell in each hand, you will always be working at an appropriate level.
Why Start with Lifting for Beginners?
Beginning with a structured Lifting for Beginners workshop gives you the confidence and technique you need before joining regular strength training classes or following a home workout plan. By the end of the session you will:
- Be able to lift very light load to light load weights with good form, so you can safely progress to more weight and heavier weights over time
- Know how to use an empty bar or unweighted bar before adding plates, and how to judge how much weight to use
- Understand how to target the correct muscle group to get the best out of an exercise
- Test your current level of strength and know what your starting point is for each exercise
This workshop is also an excellent stepping stone into our regular classes, giving you a solid base in technique and confidence so that future sessions feel familiar rather than intimidating. You leave knowing how to adjust your stance to shoulder width or hip width apart, when to keep knees slightly bent, and how to brace your core when lifting a heavy weight.

FAQs
Do I need any experience?
No previous experience with strength training or gym workouts is required; the workshop is designed specifically for people who are brand new to lifting weights or returning after time away.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear comfortable clothing you can move in, such as gym leggings or shorts and a T-shirt, plus trainers with a flat, supportive sole. Bring water and, if you like, a small towel.
How heavy will the weights be?
You will start with bodyweight, very light load and light load options, and only move to more weight or heavier weights if your technique is solid. The focus is always on proper form, not on lifting as heavy as possible.
Is this safe if I have existing aches or pains?
Many people with stiff knees, hips or shoulders find that learning to move with correct alignment actually helps them feel better. However, please check with your healthcare provider first if you have an existing condition, and let the coach know on arrival so they can tailor movements or use alternatives.
Will this help me gain muscle or lose weight?
Regular strength training workouts that target all major muscle groups can help you build muscle, improve muscle tone and burn more calories even at rest. This workshop shows you how to train effectively so you can follow a consistent plan and combine it with nutrition and rest days to reach your goals.
