Learn Olympic weightlifting technique from experienced Olympic lifting coaches. Complete beginners are very welcome.
Olympic weightlifting is a fun and absorbing sport that will challenge you both physically and mentally. You’ll move better, become stronger, and feel amazing!
Getting started with Olympic Weightlifting
In normal times, we offer both online and gym beginner sessions (held in our London Gym) in Olympic Weightlifting. Both of these options are suitable for those completely new to the Olympic lifts. Please read on to decide which option is best for you.
Option 1: Gym intro workshops
Update 14/01/21: during national lockdown our classes are all online. We run ‘Weightlifting From Home’ on Saturdays at 10am and Wednesdays at 8am. Non member drop in is £5 per class. Book here.
Our gym beginner sessions are ideal if you can travel to our Olympic Weightlifting gym in east London (E15 3BP). These workshops are suitable for complete beginners, and no prior experience is necessary.
We run our beginner sessions on a Sunday afternoon, 1pm-4pm. The cost of the 3-hour workshop is £45.
Option 2: Online Intro to Olympic Weightlifting package
Our online Intro package is perfect if you are not able to travel to us, or you would rather get started without lots of other people around. It’s natural to want to learn technique in your own home at your own pace, before venturing into the gym.
The online package is suitable for all beginners. No weights equipment is needed to get started – a broomstick or similar long object will be fine.
The Online Intro package includes:
- Private 1-2-1 session with a coach (online) to assess your starting point and work on individual needs
- A month of weekly online classes, learning the basic techniques for the snatch and clean & jerk with a broomstick at home (Weightlifting From Home class)
- All online classes are live with a coach and you’ll get feedback on your lifting in every session. If you cannot make a class, you can request a recording.

What’s it like learning Olympic lifting online?
Hear from class member Grainne about her experience of learning the olympic lifts online:
I first decided to give Strength Ambassadors’ Weightlifting online classes a go because I thought “worst case scenario I can just run away!” But I actually enjoyed my first class so much I became a regular attendee.
The only equipment I had at home was a stick but this was all I needed to learn the fundamentals of the snatch and the clean and jerk. You don’t need to be strong, or experienced to get into it. And it’s a great laugh!
I had my first Olympic Lifting class in an actual gym recently and I was amazed at how all of my newly learned skills translated to lifting with an actual barbell.
Marissa started learning online with us as she wanted to give the lifts a go in a private setting. After her first session, she wrote:
I would say that for anyone interested but nervous about joining an established group at the onset, the zoom sessions are perfect.
After an hour of instruction, I could approximate (however awkwardly) the movements. I found the combination of movement activation, mimicry/mirroring and execution to be very effective. There were big smiles at the end of the lesson.
